Carbon conversion projects

Innovative carbon conversion and/or utilisation projects aim to reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere by converting it into useful products, rather than sequestering it. Although most commonly encountered in the area of biofuels, there are many other applications. Carbon conversion and utilisation is the area where the highest level of future activity is anticipated. Tightening environmental regulations are expected to increase the cost of CO2 emissions, providing a stronger push for carbon conversion and utilisation technologies. At the same time, the increased costs of carbon-based products derived from fossil fuels will provide a financial pull as energy sources required to produce these products dwindle and become more costly.

While there are many carbon conversion projects under development across a wide range of sectors, this article will focus on the cement industry.
