Future-proofing fuel management

Published 08 June 2016

The cement industry has been successfully embracing alternative fuels to co-fire or replace fossil fuels with many producers now achieving 80 per cent substitution or better. But bulk materials handling solutions to ensure a consistent fuel feed to the combustion process can be problematic. Saxlund International offers a fuel-processing solution that is not only reliable and efficient but also low in maintenance and cost effective. By Matt Drew, Saxlund International, UK.

The cement industry’s goal is to increase the use of alternative fuel to cut costs and reduce CO2 emissions. It has seen all types of alternative fuels, including whole or chopped car tyres, meat and bone meal (MBM) and processed sewage pellets (PSP), each with different handling requirements. Today, in the UK especially, the focus is turning increasingly to waste materials diverted from landfill to reduce overhead costs and improve energy efficiency.
