With China’s cement industry due to reduce its energy use and emissions to levels set out in the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan, South Cement’s Vice Chief Engineer, Chen Yourong, looks at the technological options available to the industry to achieve the plan’s targets by 2020. With a total cement production of 2.3bnt in 2017, China’s cement industry is the largest in the world and its operating conditions account for a sizeable slice of the national total in terms of energy use and emissions into the environment. The industry’s energy consumption accounts for around five per cent of the China’s total energy demand. In 2015 the sector generated dust and NOx emissions to the tune of 5.4 and 9.2 per cent of the national total, respectively.
