With a rapidly-expanding construction sector, Cambodia’s need for cement going forward seems assured. For cement producers it is a call to build new cement plants and increase market share. With an annual GDP growth of seven per cent in recent years, Cambodia is one of the fastest-growing economies in the region. One of the key drivers of this economic expansion has been the construction sector. In 2017 total investment in the sector reached US$6.7bn, a YoY increase of over 20 per cent, according to government sources. This growth has been across the board with the country’s real estate sector experiencing considerable expansion in all segments, from residential to commercial building, and is further boosted by significant infrastructure development. Huge investment from China, as part of its “Belt and Road” initiative, continues to fuel Cambodia’s building boom.
