The use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in blended cements produced by Votorantim Cimentos has enabled the company to advance its decarbonisation journey. Blended cement from its Laranjeiras works in Brazil has proven to be the preferred choice for infrastructure projects due to the enhanced durability of concrete. By Silvia Vieira, Votorantim Cimentos, Brazil.
Votorantim Cimentos has committed to net zero CO2 concrete by 2050. To achieve this goal, it is crucial to reduce the amount of clinker in cement and, consequently, in concrete (see Figure 1). Therefore, the company has already set ambitious targets for CO2 reduction, which by 2030 should be 24.8 per cent lower than in 2018, or down to 475kg CO2/t of cementitious, and a clinker factor of just 68 per cent.
