A multi-faceted commitment to reduce environmental impact, optimise resources and meet rising demand has resulted in some creative and operationally impressive projects across Heidelberg Materials’ US and Canada portfolio in the last year. By Neal Parlatore and Shahid Ahmed, Heidelberg Materials North America, USA

Three notable North American projects – a clinker storage dome conversion, a hydraulic roller press addition and an alternative fuel (AF) dosing system addition – emphasise Heidelberg Materials’ ongoing focus on and commitment to production efficiency and sustainability in the region. While each differs in technical complexity, they have all resulted in enhanced operations while providing community and environmental benefit.

Clinker storage dome conversion at Picton, Canada

Heidelberg Materials sought to increase cement storage by 200 per cent or more at its Picton Cement Plant and Terminal in Picton, Ontario, Canada, to meet growing market and production demand while at the same time maximise mill operations. After looking at available options, the project team opted to repurpose an ageing and underutilised φ61m (200ft) clinker dome storage facility into a 70,000t cement storage unit – without building new and expensive infrastructure.
