Nitrogen gas in VRM

Why is it that only Nitrogen gas is used in Hydraulic cylinder of VRM. Is there any specific reason? Are there any alternatives to Nitrogen gas.

Hello Babli,

Nitrogen is used because it is the cheapest, chemically-inert gas available. If air is used (or allowed to enter the system), there is always the danger of explosion of air-oil vapour in the accumulator due to the oxygen content.  Inert gases are also non-corrosive.

Other chemically-inert gases such as argon could be used, but they are all much more expensive to produce than nitrogen.
