Bluecircle Southern Cement at New Berrima has been granted permission to use alternative fuels in its everyday operations after nearly a three year campaign. Following an assessment by an independent investigator, the Department of Planning has granted the factory permission to use liquid oil material, carbon products and used tyres instead of coal.

Its works manager, Ian Unsworth, says the tightly controlled use of alternative fuels will make the works more efficient and more environmentally friendly."The technology of our kiln at Berrima has been upgraded to international best practice technology," he said.
