St Lawrence Cement’s plant in Mississauga, Ontario, won top honours in two categories of the 4th Annual Cement Industry Environment and Energy Awards sponsored by the Portland Cement Association (PCA) and Cement Americas magazine.
The plant received the top prize in both Overall Environmental Excellence and Environmental Performance for its ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, its control and reduction of emissions, its waste minimisation and reduction of natural resource consumption, its recognition from the community and its high level of employee environmental awareness.
These awards, which were presented in New York last week, aim at recognizing the cement producers for innovative practices, programs and projects throughout North America. The Portland Cement Association had already underlined the Mississauga plant’s environmental excellence through three awards in 2002.
"I am proud that our Mississauga cement plant stands out in North America. These awards are an additional recognition of the continuous efforts the plant dedicates to improve its environmental performance and its commitment towards the community," said Philippe Arto, President and CEO of St Lawrence Cement. "These successes also reflect St. Lawrence Cement’s progress towards sustainable development and its adherence to stringent standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001," added Mr. Arto.
