Philippines-based Big Boss Cement has pulled out of its plans to construct a grinding unit worth PHP6bn (US$116.5m) in Bamban, Tarlac, following protests by some of the town’s residents. The protesters were reportedly concerned that the plant would pose health risks to the community, according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
"Upon learning that the people in Bamban had contested its project, Big Boss Cement backed out," said Bamban Mayor, Jose Feliciano. Mr Feliciano also noted some of his projects are now in jeopardy as the town will no longer receive the required income from the plant’s operation.
The proposed site for the project was agricultural land that traverses four villages.
