Bamburi Cement’s subsidiary, Hima Cement, is consulting leaders and the local community in Moroto in Uganda, to access surface mining rights.
Hima Cement (LafargeHolcim group) is in the process of acquiring a mining lease for the extraction of limestone and marble in Rupa subcounty. Hima Cement has earmarked a block of 14.26km2 in the location.
Don Bwesigye, the lead consultant for Hima Cement, says the company has been on the ground since 2015 when it acquired an exploration licence, which later translated into a location licence in Rupa subcounty. He notes that the company has established the existence of vast limestone deposits in the area.
Meanwhile, Xente app, an e-commerce platform, has signed an agreement with Hima Cement to provide cement to its retailers at wholesale prices, cutting out the middle man. The scheme also aims to bring products, such as cement and roofing materials, under one digital platform to give customers the benefit of buying products online.
