Colombia’s Ministry of Environmental and Sustainable Development has recognised cement producer Argos, part of Grupo Argos, as an active participant in the National Carbon Neutrality Programme.

Through its participation in the programme, Argos commits to supporting Colombia’s target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 51 per cent by 2030 when compared with the reference scenario, and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. One of the pillars of its commitment is the replacement of fossil fuels by co-processing waste to fire its kilns.

"This experience has allowed us to share good practices with other companies around the measurement and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. These are consolidated in our climate change strategy, through which we seek to reduce net specific direct CO2 emissions by 29 per cent compared to the levels we had in 2006, which is equivalent to emitting a maximum of 523kg CO2/t of cementitious material; achieving a 33 per cent replacement of caloric consumption from the use of alternative fuels and specifically offering net carbon zero to 2050,” said Ana María Duque Correa, Colombia region environmental director of Cementos Argos.
