Holcim España has reinforced its commitment to decarbonisation by investing in facilities for the use of renewable fuels at its Carboneras cement plant in Almería, Spain. The EUR4m project ensures that the plant is now capable of sourcing 70 per cent of its thermal energy requirements from renewable fuels, resulting in a reduction of more than 22,000t of CO2 emissions linked to energy use.
Attending the inauguration of the new facilities, Jorge Paradela, minister of industry, energy and mines for the Government of Andalusia, highlighted the role that Andalusia wants to play in the promotion of clean technologies. “We are already a powerhouse in renewables and we want to be leaders and be in the top three in Europe,” said Mr Paradela. He also drew attention to other Holcim projects at Carboneras that have been supported by the Government of Andalusia, such as a capture plant for CO2 that is reused in the local agricultural sector, and a photovoltaic plant.
Carmen Díaz, CEO of Holcim España, commented, “Today we celebrate another step in our green growth in Andalusia, and a paradigm shift in the industrial sector. At Holcim we are committed to the development of Carboneras and the Andalusian region as a whole. We are convinced of the need to accelerate and lead, jointly, the transformation of the industry, this being an indispensable piece in the progress of our society and our country.”
