Heidelberg Materials will stop clinker production at its Añorga plant in Spain. The company will continue operating the plant as a grinding facility. The step will enable the company to focus on the production of reduced clinker cement, resulting in a broad range of sustainable products for customers in Spain and southwest France.
Heidelberg Materials will focus its clinker production in northern Spain at its Arrigorriaga plant near Bilbao, which is able to produce more efficiently and with lower CO2 emissions, according to the company.
The company plans an investment of EUR32m for the decarbonisation of both facilities in the 2024-26 period. Halting clinker production at Añorga will result in a 50 per cent immediate reduction in CO2 emissions when compared with the 2023 level. It will also allow the company “to comply with the obligations arising from the Energy Transition and Climate Change Law of Euskadi, approved with the support of 82 per cent of the Basque parliament last February.”
