Lafarge Canada played a key role in the West Five project, an innovative development recognised as Canada’s first sustainable smart community, located in London, Ontario. Designed and developed to set new standards for low-carbon urban living, this project showcases the power of collaboration, innovation and sustainable materials.

The Ontario Concrete Awards recently recognised West Five for excellence in the Sustainable Concrete Construction category. This award celebrates the innovative use of materials and the project’s impact on sustainable urban design. The use of Lafarge Canada’s low-carbon concrete, ECOPact, aligns perfectly with the cement producer’s commitment to reduce emissions in the built environment.

Key highlights of the project include:
• Lafarge Canada (Holcim group) supplied approximately 16,500m3 of concrete to the project, including 12,000m3 of its ECOPact low-carbon concrete.
• Low-carbon concrete adoption: by incorporating low-carbon concrete, the project significantly reduced its carbon footprint without compromising strength or durability.
• Collaborative Efforts: a collaboration with Sifton Properties, Hayman Construction Inc, Middlesex Concrete Forming and michael + clark Construction ensured sustainability goals aligned with innovative building practices.
• Carbon savings: the ECOPact mixes accounted for a CO2 reduction on the project of approximately 1250t, this translates into 20,669 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.
