Cookstown-based Cemcor has successfully trialled CalcinX, the UK’s first low-carbon cement product. CalcinX, a calcined clay material, is produced at lower temperatures than conventional clinker, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Managing Director, David Millar, described it as a "game-changer" for sustainable construction, enhancing Cemcor’s product range and supporting customers’ sustainability goals.
Since acquiring Lafarge Ireland in 2022 for GBP56m, Cemcor has prioritised sustainability, investing GBP6m in ESG initiatives. Partnering with Queen’s University Belfast and supported by Innovate UK, Cemcor has optimised CalcinX, producing over 3000t to date. Trials with Tobermore and Moore Concrete have refined the product, which is available as standalone CalcinX or a pre-formulated blend with reduced clinker content, marking a major milestone for the UK cement industry.
