Bamburi Cement’s Mombasa plant has disposed of at least 99kg of hard narcotics worth KES297m in its cement kiln. The seized heroin and cocaine was incinerated at the request of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations [DCI] Kenya, Office of The Director of Public Prosecutions, Judiciary Kenya and Government Chemist. The infrastructure was endorsed as the most secure choice to destroy the narcotics.
"In our strategic ambition to reduce fuel and process emissions by moving away from fossil fuels towards a clean circular economy, our kilns co-processes wastes and convert them into energy, crucially minimising CO2 emissions. We are proud to have been part of contributing to this public interest solution that succeeded in eliminating the threats posed to our fellow Kenyans," said Bamburi Cement’s sustainability and Geocycle director, Jane Wangari.
Bamburi Cement, in collaboration with the public and international development sectors, has previously worked with major multi-agency teams to dispose of over 5000t of harmful waste imported into the country at its Mombasa plant. Recently, the cement producer partnered with the government to destroy 73t of contaminated cereals from the Mukumu Girls High School tragedy.
