Vicat’s Montalieu plant to be CCS pilot site

27 June 2023, Published under Cement News

As part of the decarbonisation strategy of the top-50 industrial sites with the highest CO 2 emissions, Vicat ’s Montalieu-Vercieu cement plant is expected to be a carbon capture and storage (CCS) pilot site for France. “The idea is to go faster. We had a post-2030 project. We are moving it forward and aiming for implementation before 2030. We are even talking about 2027,” explains Guy Sidos, the CEO of Vicat. “We give ourselves the possibility of going to capture 1Mta of CO 2 , knowing t...

UK government funds CCS trial at Breedon Cement

11 May 2023, Published under Cement News

The UK government is handing Breedon Cement GBP230,000 (US$290,338/EUR264,453) to investigate the use of carbon capture and storage facilities (CCS) in its cement production. The Derbyshire-based company said the cash injection will allow it to "significantly advance knowledge of the infrastructure" needed to push the company's lime and cement plants in Derbyshire to a "low-carbon future".  The government is paying 50 per cent of the project cost via its Industrial Energy Transformation...

Cementa prepares groundwork for 2030 electricity supply at Slite plant

24 April 2023, Published under Cement News

Cementa ( Heidelberg Materials ) is working purposefully in three areas to enable the transition to its carbon capture and storage  (CCS) facility at its Slite plant by 2030. The plant will need significantly more electricity, which will place great demands on the company as part of Gotland's electricity system as well as on the collaborations on which Cementa depend.   Cementa is working to produce cement with as little energy as possible. Energy efficiency is also a decisive fact...

Viking CCS project targets UK cement emissions

20 April 2023, Published under Cement News

Harbour Energy and BP have entered into an agreement to develop the Viking carbon capture transportation and storage project near the heavily industrialised Humber region in the UK. According to BP, the Viking CCS project has the potential to meet one third of the UK government’s target to capture and store up to 30Mta of CO 2 by 2030 from the local steelmaking, refining, chemicals and cement industries. The two companies already share an interest in the Lincolnshire Offshore Gas Gatheri...

Carbon4Minerals targets CCS and carbon-negative materials

31 March 2023, Published under Cement News

The Carbon4Minerals  project consortium, composed of 14 partners from seven European countries, is a collaborative effort to develop innovative technologies for CO₂ capture and use in the production of carbon-negative minerals for high-value construction products, with the potential to reduce CO₂ emissions by 80-135 per cent compared to cement-based reference materials. The core concept of Carbon4Minerals addresses the simultaneous use of CO₂ from industrial flue gases with current and...

Ecocem Director speaks out against composition of Net Zero Industry Act

17 March 2023, Published under Cement News

Ecocem ’s Founder and Managing Director, Donal O'Riain, has spoken out on what he terms a missed opportunity with the passing of Europe's Net Zero Industry ACT (NZIA). Mr Riain stressed that the Net Zero Industry ACT (NZIA) takes no account of alternative technologies to cut in half CO 2 emissions from the cement industry by 2030.  From a low-carbon cement technology perspective, the scope of the NZIA is very specific. Companies and technologies will need to fall in to one of the narrow...
