Spain’s cement sector recovers 57Mt of waste in 15 years

26 November 2021, Published under Cement News

The Spanish cement industry has recovered 57Mt of waste from 88 sectors between 2004-19, reports the Fundación CEMA in collaboration with Institut Cerdà. This has prevented the release of 1Mt of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere and savings of EUR115m by not sending the waste to landfills. The report confirms that the optimisation of synergies has resulted in the cement sector becoming one of the largest recyclers of mineral waste in Spain and a leader in energy recovery. It has injected alm...

Leading the circular economy

12 July 2021, Published under Cement News

In a world where carbon neutrality has become a political imperative and resources are finite, there is no doubt that developing circular approaches will be essential to decarbonise industries. For the European cement sector, the ability to phase out fossil fuels through the use of waste and the 100 per cent recyclability of concrete, offer key advantages to build upon. By CEMBUREAU, Belgium. In addition to providing sound solutions for waste streams and strengthening the circular ...

The value of co-processing

21 May 2021, Published under Cement News

This week, the European cement association, Cembureau held an open webinar on 'A circular and carbon neutral Europe: The role of co-processing'. The webinar not only looked at how co-processing works and the use of different waste streams, but also considered key policy measures and co-processing's contribution to the wider Green Deal initiative. The Green Deal Peter Wessman, legal officer at the Directorate of Environment, European Commission (EC), argued that the central pillars of the ...

GE Renewable Energy and Veolia sign turbine blade recycle agreement

21 December 2020, Published under Cement News

GE Renewable Energy has signed a multi-year agreement with Veolia North America (VNA) to recycle blades removed from its US-based onshore wind turbines during upgrades and repowering efforts. Through this agreement, GE plans to recycle the majority of blades that are replaced during repowering efforts. Veolia will process the blades for use as a raw material for cement, utilising a cement kiln co-processing technology. VNA has a successful history of supplying repurposed engineered material...

Report calls for co-processing of wind turbine blades to be scaled up

02 June 2020, Published under Cement News

The cement sector's cooperation is expected to be required to ease the challenge of recycling decommissioned wind turbines, according to a new report from WindEurope, the European Chemical Industry Council and the European Composites Industry Association. While 85-90 per cent of wind turbines can be recycled, the blades are a relatively small volume of the total composite waste and are a 'specifically challenging' waste stream, says the report. Although the cement sector enables disposal ...

UNTHA Iberia delivers shredder for Geocycle's Albox facility

12 May 2020, Published under Cement News

Geocycle (LafargeHocim) has received an XR3000C shredder from UNTHA Ibera for its Albox (Almeria) facility for co-processing in Spain. The equipment will help transform 15,000tpa of hazardous solid waste into pretreated waste with the right granulometry for co-processing in cement kilns. The new shredding line means Geocycle can now convert nationally-produced commercial and industrial waste – including oil/solvent contaminated textiles, plastics, paper and cardboard – into co-processing-re...
