The laying of the foundation stone of a new cement plant in Katanda, Lomami province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been postponed indefinitely. The plant will be built in Bakwa Tshiluila, some 70km northeast of Mbujimayi, where deposits of limestone and other raw materials have been discovered. Cement price rises further in Congo DR

A shortage of cement is driving up prices in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The price of a 50kg bag of 32-grade cement has increased to CDF14,300 (US$8.46) from CDF14,000. For 42.5-grade cement the price has risen from 14,700 to 15,000/50kg bag. At retail level, prices vary between COF16,000-18,000.

DR Congo cement demand weakens in 10M19

Grey cement consumption in the Democratic Republic of Congo reached 390,279t in the first 10 months of 2019, according to ACP. Production reached 959,088t during the same period. The low demand reflects the slowdown in construction work in the building and public works sector. In 2018 cement demand reached 1,045,199t and domestic production 1,043,340t, according to Central Bank of Congo.

DRC utilisation rate remains low

The Central Bank of Congo put cement production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at 1.842Mt in 2018. Around 1.825Mt were delivered to the domestic market. Production in the period up to April 2018 was 397,000t, of which 390,000t were sold within DRC. Therefore, the capacity utilisation of Congo’s cement plants is around 40-50 per cent according to the bank, although in February 2019 a rate of 52 per cent was recorded.

Renewed interest in CIMAIKO

Following the import ban on grey cement in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), importers have taken more creative ways to import cement into the central African country. According to reports by Agence d’Information d’Afrique Centrale, grey cement is now imported via canoe on the Congo River to the main consumption centres in the country. Local producers have protested, citing unfair competition, import fraud and a low product quality as the main reasons for their grievances.
