Mixed results for Egyptian producers

Egypt’s Alexandria Cement has announced a further consolidated net loss in the first quarter of 2018, which widened 17.1 per cent YoY to EGP34.78m. Furthermore, the company recorded a standalone net loss of EGP71.28m against a net profit of EGP12.63m seen in the year-ago period. Elsewhere, Misr Beni Suef Cement posted a 280.9 per cent YoY rise in net profit to EGP125.9m for 1Q18. Sales saw a significant increase of 77.3 per cent to EGP619.1m, compared to EGP349.1m of the previous year.

Saudi company to invest in Egyptian production lines

A Saudi Arabian company is expected to invest EGP500m (US$28.37m) in three Egyptian production lines, according to Ahmed Abdel Razek, head of the General Authority for Industrial Development. Mr Razek stated that the company has requested 200,000m in the industrial zone of Alexandria's Borg-El-Arab, and the first line will commence in 18 months once the land is allocated. Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Khaled Fahmy, has opened a cement production line at Arabian Cement Co’s facility in Ain Sokhna, Suez, that uses Hot Disk technology for alternative fuel production from recycled waste, according to Watani. Egyptian cement prices increased by EGP250/t (US$14.14/t) to reach EGP1100/t at the beginning of March, reports Ahram Online. Egypt’s cement exports increased 79 per cent in January 2018 to reach US$7m, compared to US$4m in the year-ago period, according to a report from the country's Export Council for Building Materials. Egyptian cement producer Alexandria Cement reported a consolidated net losses of EGP513.85m (US$ 29.13m) , when compared with net losses of EGP50.86m in 2016. The company’s standalone net loss in 2017 also widened from EGP187.48m to EGP301.79m during the same period.
