Cemex plant sets alternative fuels record, UK

Cemex’s South Ferriby cement plant in North Lincolnshire set a new record last month by replacing over 74% of the fuel with alternative fuels made from wastes. This new record for the plant may also be a new record in the UK, where, according to the British Cement Association, the cement industry average is 19.4%. Portland to construct wind farms, Spain

Spanish cement producer Cementos Portland Valderrivas has chosen three sites to construct wind farms with a combined capacity of 50MW in line with its strategic plan until 2011, the company said on Monday. The wind power plants will cost about EUR 40m. A planned limestone quarry near Ragland could come with a 140-acre nature preserve just upstream in St Clair County, according to a public notice by the US Army Corps of Engineers. EPA is rescheduling its May 26, 2009 public hearing to solicit comments on a proposal to slash mercury emissions from Portland cement kilns in order to have hearings at additional locations. The Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) unveiled its vision of a "sectoral approach" to tackling CO2. The project has built a system for monitoring, reporting and verifying CO2 and aims to share technology and best practice for cutting those emissions amid a myriad of regional and global regulations, caps and curbs. Cemex has replaced 74% of the fuel used to heat its cement kiln at a North Lincolnshire plant with fuels made from wastes, according to reports from Contract Journal.
