Geocycle helps Cement Australia to maximise alternative fuel recovery

09 July 2024, Published under Cement News

During 2023 Geocycle, in partnership with Cement Australia, managed to process approximately 60,000t of solid, liquid and gaseous industrial wastes. This resource was used safely and compliantly through the cement kilns located in Railton (Tasmania) and Gladstone (Queensland). The cement producer used approximately 25,036kl of industrial waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill and approximately 36,399kl of alternative fuel replacement was produced, while 39,419t of coal was re...

Brookfield plant produces clinker from recycled materials

28 May 2024, Published under Cement News

Lafarge Canada and Geocycle Canada ( Holcim group ) are proud to announce the completion of a pilot at the Lafarge Brookfield Cement plant in Nova Scotia, Canada, to produce high-quality clinker made of recycled minerals. The recycled materials are recovered from waste sources, which can potentially reduce CO 2 level by 60 per cent per tonne of clinker.  Over the past year, Lafarge Canada , Geocycle Canada and the Holcim Group Innovation Centre have been collaborating on a 100 per cent ...

Holcim El Salvador receives positive packaging certificate

23 April 2024, Published under Cement News

Holcim El Salvador received the 100% Recovered Energy (Positive Packaging) distinction, awarded by the international certification company Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), for recovering from the environment packaging of the same or greater amount than the paper used in its cement packaging. The recovered packaging is used in co-processing. The company recovers paper through a waste separation station in Santa Ana, where waste from 16 municipalities in the country arrives. Thanks to...

Geocycle Egypt completes new SRF platform

25 January 2024, Published under Cement News

Geocycle Egypt has launched its SRF hub, giving it precise control over the quantity and premium quality of alternative fuel at 15MJ/t RDF, adhering to our specifications and standards. According to Operations Manage Mina George, the platform will decrease Geocycle’s carbon footprint by 350,000t CO 2 in 2024. Using the CHF10m (US$115.8m)   investment in the state-of-the-art platform with a production capacity of 250,000t SRF in addition to the other seven alternative fuel streams.  P...

Natural gas and CO2 abatement across the Atlantic

30 June 2023, Published under Cement News

This week we look at the differing attitudes to alternative fuels (AFs) on each side of the Atlantic. While CEMBUREAU in its 2022 Activity Report has demonstrated the rising level of co-processing in the EU-27 as achieving 52 per cent, in the USA a study by Global Efficiency Intelligence (GEI) has argued that US cement plants may well do better replacing coal and petcoke with natural gas rather than alternative fuels. Europe is considered the leading proponent of co-processing and the use...

Geocycle UK accelerates decarbonisation efforts

16 June 2023, Published under Cement News

The investment of GBP13.5M (US$17.25m/EUR15.7m) contributes to Geocycle's commitment to decarbonise the Aggregate Industries ' Cauldon cement plant ( Holcim group ) by saving up to 30,000t of CO 2 per year. At the same time the platform supports the country's efforts to find sustainable solutions for non-recyclable waste streams such as plastics, fibres and textiles. The majority of the material comes from within a 50-mile radius of the site, reducing transport emissions whilst ensuring ...

Geocycle and Lafarge Canada to divert waste to Brookfield plant

11 May 2023, Published under Cement News

Driven by its Strategy 2025 ‘Accelerating Green Growth’, Geocycle Canada and Lafarge Canada have been paving the way to use low-carbon alternative fuels to divert household, commercial, and construction and demolition wastes away from landfills. The project will significantly increase the plant’s capacities to pre-process plastics and high biogenic waste materials (banned from landfills in Nova Scotia), and then sustainably co-process these wastes in the cement manufacturing process. T...

Holcim supports waste recycling in Philippines

29 September 2022, Published under Cement News

Holcim Philippines Inc and its waste management unit, Geocycle, pledged to support the municipalities of Binangonan, Cainta and Taytay in Rizal in managing their waste sustainably by converting it into low-carbon alternative fuels for cement production. The company has agreed with the three municipalities that the latter will transport up to 650tpa of non-hazardous and non-recyclable residual wastes (including plastics, laminates, textiles and rubber) to Holcim’s Bulacan plant for pre- a...

LafargeHolcim Spain to participate in Horizon 2020

20 June 2022, Published under Cement News

LafargeHolcim Spain will participate in a new project "Horizon 2020” . The project will involve research into pyrolysis, which is a promising technology for recycling unsorted heterogeneous plastic waste. This technology consists of the thermal degradation of plastic waste in the absence of oxygen. The project will be carried out in two stages: first, adapting and testing a full-scale pilot plant at Repsol's Technology Laboratory to optimise the components and process conditions, an...
