Lafarge Zimbabwe losses increase to US$2.2m

Lafarge Zimbabwe has announced a 1H16 loss of US$2.2m, an increase from the 1H15 US$1.3m loss, the Insider reports. Competition from cheap imported cement and rising output from other domestic producers had had an impact on profits, as had softening demand caused by Zimbabwe’s economic difficulties, said the company. Lafarge Zambia to raise cement exports to DR Congo

Cement exports to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are expected to increase after Lafarge Cement Zambia Plc drew up an agreement with Zambia Railways Ltd (ZRL) to export 400tpw of cement to the DRC. Lafarge chief executive officer, Emmanuel Rigaux, said Lafarge would quadruple its exports to Malawi and the DRC. Lafarge Zimbabwe investigating locations for US$250m cement works

Lafarge Zimbabwe is currently looking for a suitable location for a new US$250m cement plant in the country. Lafarge and the Zimbabwe government have agreed on Lafarge reducing its shareholding in the Zimbabwean cement manufacturer to 49 per cent. “We have agreed with the relevant authorities on the indigenisation modalities to bring down foreign shareholding to 49 per cent, in line with the indigenisation and economic empowerment [policy]. Lafarge Zimbabwe has revised its revenue forecast upwards for 2012 for the second time this year after the group reported a significant rise in profits for the first half driven by increased sales.
