Malaysia: Borneo Oil signs US$18m limestone deposit deal

According to reports in the Star newspaper, Borneo Oil has signed a 30-year deal enabling it to mine marble and limestone in Lahad Datu, Borneo. In an announcement to the Malaysian stock exchange, Borneo oil revealed it had paid MYR80m (US$18m) for the right to mine reserves estimated at 24.5Mt. Malaysia’s Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMS) reported a total revenue of MYR1.10bn and a pretax profit of MYR160.41m in the first nine months of 2016, down 14 and 40 per cent YoY, respectively. The group’s cement division recorded a pretax profit of MYR76.98m, a decrease of 14 per cent YoY when compared with the record MYR89.23m recorded in 9M15. Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (CMSB) has said it will be able produce a year-round reliable supply of cement following the commissioning of its third and largest plant in Mambong, Sarawak. The new plant has an estimated production capacity of 1Mta and represents a MYR190m (US$44.9m) investment. Lafarge Cement Sdn Bhd has agreed to bear the cost of cleaning up the homes of residents in three villages affected by dust accidentally released from one of its plants last Monday as a result of repair works on a blocked processing unit. Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (CMSB) has announced its earnings figures for the first half of 2016, including those of its cement division. This recorded a pretax profit of MYR41.7m (US$10.2m) on revenues of MYR275m.
