SCAEK completes first stage API certification

Algeria-based Société des Ciments de Ain El Kebira (SCAEK) has succesfully completed the first phase of the American Petroleum Institute audit to certify petroleum cement as a new product manufactured by the cement producer. The first step was originally planned for last March but was then postponed to July 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company was awarded the API label in July 2019. Egypt sees cement sales surge 42% in June

Egypt's cement industry has reported a sudden surge in total sales, recording 3.64Mt during June 2020, including minimal exports, up 42 per cent MoM and one per cent YoY. Dal Engineering wins north African ball mill order

Dal Engineering has won an EPC contract to supply a new grinding plant in north Africa. DAL Engineering has signed a contract to supply a ball mill measuring 3m x10m for the project, which was shipped on 19 June 2020.

Moroccan cement demand expands 33% in June

Cement consumption in Morocco increased 33 per cent YoY to 1,129,708t in June 2020 when compared with June 2019, when demand stood at 849,524t, according to data by the country's cement association, APC. However, in the first half year of 2020 domestic sales fell 18.5 per cent YoY to 5.473Mt, down from 6.718Mt reported in the 1H19.

Egyptian cement exports decline by 32% Jan-May 2020

Egyptian cement exports declined by roughly 32 per cent during the first five months of 2020 to US$47m, compared to US$68m during the same period in 2019. Egypt exported cement in the 5M20 to about 51 countries, including 18 countries who had not imported Egyptian cement in the same quarter in 2019, reports Egypt Today.

Tourah Portland Cement sees loss widen in 1Q20

Egypt’s Tourah Portland Cement has seen its net loss widen to EGP64.9m (US$4m) in the first quarter of 2020, compared to EGP50.9m in the 1Q19. The company also reported an 82.8 per cent YoY decline in sales to EGP50m from EGP290.8m.

National Cement Co reopens Souq Al-Khamis factory

Libya’s Economic and Social Development Fund has announced National Cement Co will be resuming production at its Souq Al-Khamis factory. The fund said security conditions in the region, which saw intensive fighting during the aggression on Tripoli, have improved since the cessation of military operations and the defeat of the Haftar militias in southern Tripoli. Therefore, the 1Mta plant will be able to operate once again.

Suez Cement sees 27% fall in revenue

Egypt’s Suez Cement has posted an EGP389.65m (US$24.07m) net loss in its consolidated results for the 1Q20, compared to an EGP213.07m profit in the first quarter of 2019. The company’s revenue also fell 26.5 per cent YoY to EGP1.33bn from EGP1.81bn. Suez Cement’s standalone results saw its net loss widen to EGP193.84m in the January-March 2020 period, against EGP95.16m in the 1Q19.

Carthage Cement begins exporting cement to Italy

Tunisia’s Carthage Cement launched its first export shipment of 4100t of EC-certified Portland cement to Italy last Friday. The dispatch is reportedly part of a larger contract to supply 250,000t of cement and clinker to Europe. "Our company has got a certification of the products in compliance with the requirements of the European standards, which has helped us be the first to enter the European market and we intend to remain there," indicated Brahim Sanaa, CEO, Carthage Cement.

Sinai Cement sees net losses widen in 1Q20

Egypt’s Sinai Cement saw its net losses widen 35 per cent YoY to EGP105.44m (US$6.5m) in the first quarter of 2020, compared to a loss of EGP78.16m in the corresponding period of last year. However, the company’s net sales increased 5.3 per cent YoY to EGP211.73m from EGP201.08m in the 1Q19.
