Cement shortage in Senegal intensifies

Technical issues at Sococim’s cement factory are affecting the company’s clinker supply and are impacting on Senegal’s cement output, according to Senegal Direct. The country has already suffered a shortage of the product and has seen prices increase from XOF3000 (US$5.13)/bag to XOF3300/bag.

The maximum cement price in Senegal will remain at previous year’s level, according to the country’s Ministry of Commerce. Gambia has imposed a new import tax regulation on cement being imported from Senegal that has exacerbated the shortage of cement and increased prices in the country. Dangote Cement announced a 13.5 per cent rise in group revenues to NGN685.29bn (US$1.88bn) for 9M18 as sales volumes advanced 7.6 per cent to nearly 17.8Mt. Senegal sees 5% rise in output in 7M18

Senegal’s cement production increased by 188,500t, or 47.3 per cent to 587,300t in July 2018 when compared with July 2017 when 398,800t was produced, according to data compiled by the country’s cement plants. MoM output increased by 5.8 per cent from 555,000t in June 2018. In the first seven months of 2018, output rose 4.8 per cent to 4,133,400t, up from 3,944,900t reported in 7M17. Senegal cement price sees 10% hike

Cement prices in Senegal have been rising by XOF5000/t (US$8.93/t) in the last fortnight. The ex-works price of 32.5-grade cement has increased from XOF50,800/t to XOF55,800/t while for 42.5-grade product the current ex-works price is XOF60,400/t, up from XOF55,400/t. The price rises have been attributed to a new tax imposed by the Senegalese government. It follows a XOF3000/t price hike in January 2017.
