PPC to construct new plant in Democratic Republic of Congo

PPC has announced plans to construct a 1Mta cement factory in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as part of the company’s plans to increase revenue streams outside South Africa to 40 per cent by 2016. The company is expanding in Africa through acquisitions to offset tougher competition in its domestic market and plans an investment of plans an investment of US$200m in the central African country. South Africa sales rise by 3% in 2012

South African cement sales edged ahead 2.9 per cent in 2012 to reach 11.6Mt from 11.23Mt the year before, data from the Cement and Concrete Institute (C&CI) shows. For the final quarter of the year, sales were just over 3Mt, also representing an increase of  2.9 per cent on the same period of 2011 when fourth-quarter sales were 2.944Mt. The C&CI will be closing down at the end of April, and as such, these are the last set of statistics to be issued by the institute.

South Africa cement project secures loan

South Africa-based Nedbank and Bank of China have agreed to provide a ZAR800m (US$86m) loan for a 1Mta  greenfield cement plant in Limpopo. “A master finance agreement was entered into between Nedbank Capital and Bank of China and a special-purpose vehicle known as Mamba Cement Company,” said Nedbank head of infrastructure Brett Botha. Habesha Cement of Ethiopia has appointed a new chairman as well as new board members to reflect changes in the company's shareholding. Tamiru Wondimagegn has been appointed as Habesha Cement’s new board chairman replacing Eng Gizaw Teklemariam. Mr Wondimagegn is a lawyer and board member of the cement company. South Africa’s Cement and Concrete Institute (C&CI) is to close down following the withdrawal of funding from some of the key funding members, local producer AfriSam disclosed in a statement on Friday.  AfriSam said it believes in the value that the C&CI offered the construction industry and explored various other options in an effort to sustain this industry body. South Africa 9M12 sales rise 2.9%

South Africa cement sales for the first nine months of 2012 rose 2.9 per cent to 8.529Mt from 8.290Mt in the same period of 2011, latest data from the Cement & Concrete Institute (C&CI) shows. The moving annual total also rose 3.9 per cent to 11.473Mt from 11.038Mt in the corresponding period a year a go. However, 3Q12 sales were down 3.8 per cent to 2.976Mt compared to 3.092Mt in the 3Q11.
