Congressman Mike Turner recently took a tour of Cemex’s Fairborn plant. The factory,  which has been in operation for more than 80 years, is one of two operating cement plants in the state of Ohio. Ash Grove Cement Co has agreed to pay a US$2.5m penalty and invest approximately US$30m in pollution-control technology, the US Department of Justice and US Environmental Protection Agency announced. The EPA says the agreement, which resolves alleged violations of the Clean Air Act, will eliminate more than 17,000t of pollution from nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) each year. Data just released by the US Geological Survey shows that total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico fell by three per cent in March 2013, compared to the same period in 2012. US first-quarter figures shipments impacted by harsh winter

Preliminary data from the US Geological Survey shows that shipments of Portland and blended cement in 1Q13 were marginally higher compared to the same period of last year but harsh weather conditions, particularly in the final month of the quarter, dragged on sales.
