El Salvador market contracts 8% in 10M20

Apparent cement consumption in El Salvador in the January-October 2020 period declined 8.3 per cent to 25,558,640 bags of 42.5kg, or 1.086Mt, according to the country’s construction chamber, CASALCO. In the equivalent period of 2019, apparent consumption reached 27,881,320 bags or 1.185Mt. The ex-works price of cement remained stable in December 2020 at US$7.57/42.5kg bag but at retail level the price for bagged cement edged up 1.2 per cent YoY and 0.2 per cent MoM to US$8.41/bag

Brazilian market off to good start in January 2021

Brazilian cement demand increased by 10.1 per cent YoY and 7.3 per cent MoM to 5.03Mta in January 2021, according to the country’s cement association, SNIC. Total US and Puerto Rican shipments of Portland and blended cement advanced nine per cent to 8.6Mt in November 2020 when compared with November 2019, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The five largest cement-consuming states – Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Georgia – accounted for 40 per cent of deliveries. Bolivian cement demand advances 21% in November

The Bolivian cement market expanded by 20.9 per cent to 342,743t in November 2020 from 283,404t in November 2019, according to the country’s statistics institute, INE. However, MoM there was a 10.5 per cent decline from 382,944t in October 2020. Cement production in Bolivia surged by 77.3 per cent to 361,363t in November 2020 from 203,779t in November 2019. When compared with the previous month, output slipped 7.4 per cent from 390,321t.

Argentina's cement market expands 20% in January

Cement demand in Argentina increased 20.1 per cent to 895,559t in January 2021 when compared with January 2020, when demand reached 745,681t, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. The requirement of the market was entirely met by domestic production, which saw a 19.2 per cent rise YoY to 903,756t in the first month of the year. In January 2020 output stood at 758,095t. However, exports declined 34.1 per cent from 12,414t in January 2020 to 8197t one year later.

Grey cement dispatches in Colombia fell 2.3 per cent from 1.079Mt in December 2019 to 1.054Mt in December 2020, according to the country’s statistics agency, DANE. Chilean cement deliveries increased by 14 per cent YoY to 389,488t in November 2020 from 341,721t in the equivalent month in 2019. This was followed by a 7.7 per cent uptick in December 2020 when dispatches rose to 364,925t from 338,720t in December 2019, according to the Chilean construction chamber, CChC. Cement consumption in Spanish has declined by 9.7 per cent to 13.288Mt in 2020, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. Domestic dispatches in Peru increased 12 per cent YoY from 0.979Mt in December 2019 to 1.098Mt in December 2020, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Cement production advanced 18 per cent YoY in December 2020 as Asocem members produced 1.077Mt of cement. Output in December 2019 was 0.916Mt. Cement price in Mali surges due to shortage

Cement is becoming an increasingly scarce product in Mali. As a result, prices have risen from XOF90,000/t to XOF125,000-130,000/t, according to MaliActu.  In 2019 Mali had a cement demand of around 2.8Mt, with future consumption underpinned by a need for infrastructure and high population growth. However, output from the country’s cement industry is only approximately 1Mta and wide-spread shortages have been reported.
