BUA has signed an agreement with Wärtsilä OY of Finland for the construction of a 70MW dual-fuel power plant for the BUA Cement Sokoto Line 4 in Sokoto state, northwest Nigeria. Rock Hard Cement closes operations in Trinidad

Rock Hard Cement has now closed its business in Trinidad and Tobago and is expected to look for opportunities elsewhere in the Caribbean. In a social media post, the company noted the challenges of operating in the country. “Unfortunately, the combination of a limit on imports of 55,000t combined with an import duty of 50 per cent means that Rock Hard Distribution Inc simply cannot operate in Trinidad.” The company had announced earlier this year that it was closing down on 1 July.

Cemex plans Guatemalan expansion

Cemex will increase its cement capacity in Guatemala by early 2023 with a new grinding mill at the Arizona facility in the port of San José. The new mill will increase cement capacity from 0.4Mta to 0.9Mta and will cost approximately US$25m. Cemex plans to produce low-carbon cements with the extra capacity. Belarus cement exports up 54% in 7M21

Cement exports from Belarus increased by 53.7 per cent YoY in the January-July 2021 period, according to Belarusian Cement Co. Total cement shipments increased 110 per cent and total sales surpassed BYN14.1m (US$5.7m), reflecting a profit margin of 8.9 per cent. The company’s cement production advanced by 4.6 per cent, while its lime and chalk output were up by 7.9 and 9.5 per cent, respectively.

Tunisia-based Carthage Cement announced it will lower its wholesale prices for cement to TND150 (US$53.81) per 30t truck for two months. The decision will come into effect from 13 September 2021. The company said the step follows the advice of the National Chamber of Cement Producers after meeting with senior officials from the Ministries of Trade and Industry.
