At the start of this week, a fire broke out at Hanson's Padeswood cement works (HeidelbergCement group), UK. SOBOCE recommenced operations at its Warnes cement plant in Bolivia on 14 June after a BOB222m (US$32.1m) investment in new equipment. South Valley Cement's net losses narrow in first quarter

Egypt’s South Valley Cement has posted a net loss of EGP35.69m (US$2.28m) during the first quarter of 2021, compared to a net loss of EGP41.39m in the year-ago period. The company’s revenue declined 30 per cent YoY to EGP62.12m from EGP88.75m in the 1Q20.

Sarche plant to reactivate kiln line

Italy’s Italcementi (HeidelbergCement) has announced an investment of almost EUR5m (US$6.07m) at its Sarche plant in Madruzzo, Italy. The works will see the factory, which has been operating as a grinding unit since 2015, reactivate its pyroprocessing line. As a result, production capacity is expected to reach 250,000tpa by January 2022. The expansion is being made to meet the rising demand of northeast Italy, with the project also set to employ 30 people.

JK Cement reports 39% rise in revenue

India’s JK Cement has reported a standalone net profit of INR633.4m (US$8.65m) for the quarter ending 31 March 2021, compared to INR2.3m in the year-ago period. Net revenue also advanced 38.9 per cent YoY to INR20.52bn from INR14.77bn in the 4QFY19-20. The company’s operating profit reached INR4.39bn, up 26.8 per cent from INR3.46bn in the same period of the previous fiscal.

PPC to sell Botswana aggregate quarry business

South Africa-based PPC has entered into a binding sale and purchase agreement to sell its 100 per cent shareholding in PPC Aggregate Quarries Botswana Proprietary Ltd for a cash purchase consideration of BWP47.5m (US$4.49m). India’s Star Cement has reported a 9.8 per cent YoY rise in revenue to INR6.03bn (US$82.53m) for the quarter ending 31 March 2021, compared to INR5.49bn in the year-ago period. Net profit remained largely consistent at INR853m from INR858.3m. The company also reported a 6.7 per cent YoY fall in revenue to INR17.2bn for the FY20-21.
