Votorantim Industrial's first-quarter turnover improved by 11.2 per cent to BRL6577m (US$2985m) and the EBITDA jumped by 41 per cent to BRL1528m, but the net income dropped by 96 per cent to BRL8m. Italcementi, through its Moroccan subsidiary Ciments du Maroc, is investing in the construction of a new grinding centre at Jorf Lasfar, some 110km southwest of Casablanca. The new grinding centre will have a cement capacity of 0.45Mta and will use both limestone and fly ash as extenders, as and when required.

Cemex is investing around US$22.75m in its Dominican Republic operations, where it trades under the Cementos Titan brand. At the San Pedro de Macorís works, the company plans to generate electricity from waste heat and is currently carrying out an upgrade to the calcination system to reduce the carbon footprint. Furthermore, the bagging efficiency is being increased by 30 per cent and investments are being undertaken in its vehicle fleet.

Lafarge has agreed the sale of Lafarge Cementos in Ecuador to Union Andina de Cemento of Peru for US$553m. The completion date for the sale of this 1.4Mta works has yet to be agreed. This deal follows the sale of the Honduran cement operations to Cementos Argos at around the turn of the year. Lafarge Zimbabwe is looking for a suitable site on which to build a cement works costing US$250m-300m. Huaxin Cement, which is 41.9 per cent controlled by Holcim, has acquired a 40 per cent stake in the Cambodian cement producer Cement Chakrey Ting for US$24m.
