Mauritanian cement producers reminded of government-led pricing

Mauritania's Minister of Commerce and Tourism, Zeinebou Mint Hmednah, send a circular to the walis throughout the country to oblige traders to respect the government-led price of cement at MRU5950 (US$150.66)/t of 42 grade cement and MRU5650/t of 32 cement. The cement prices were agreed by mutual agreement between the government and cement producers. She also called on the walis to supervise the determination of the cost of transport from Nouakchott to the unloading site.

On 14 August 2024, the Supreme Court of India issued a ruling allowing states to impose taxation and royalties on minerals separately from government duties. The ruling also allows states to recover historic duties, which may lead to substantial financial obligations for major industries such as cement, steel, and coal. Cement prices in Egypt up 20% in August

Cement prices in Egypt have increased by 20 per cent since the 1 August after cement producers reduced their production, said Ahmed El-Zeini, head of building materials at the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce. The price increase ranges between EGP200-500/t with the final price for end consumers reaching approximately EGP3000/t. Mr El-Zeini said that cement plants have been informing their agents of price hikes every week since the beginning of the month.

China steps up drive for alternative fuels

From 1 October Kyrgyzstan is enforcing a six-month road import ban on cement types including Portland, alumina and slag cements, according to a decree signed by Akylbek Japarov, chairman of the country's cabinet of ministers. In May 2024 the USA and Puerto Rico reported a total of 0.56Mt of Portland and blended cement shipments, down 8.2 per cent YoY, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The leading cement-consuming states – Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Georgia – received 39 per cent of shipments in May.
