Euro-area construction output falls 1.4%

Euro-area construction in January 2013 fell 1.4 per cent from the month before as gains in Germany were offset by slumps in Spain and France, according to latest figures by Eurostat. Calls for a review of Vietnam's cement industry master plan

Vietnam’s Building Materials Association has used the Ministry of Construction (MoC) to adjust the master plan for the cement industry for the 2011-20 period and has suggested a series of measures to ease the current surplus situation. Burundi Cement Co doubles production, eyes capacity expansion

Burundi Cement Co (BUCECO), the central African country’s sole supplier, has doubled production and profits in its first two years of operation and is considering doubling capacity, the company has said in a statement. BUCECO, which began production in January 2011 produced 70,500t of cement in 2012 compared to 34,500t the year before. The NEXE Group has successfully completed a EUR1.6m annual routine maintenance of its kiln at its Nasicecement works and clinker production resumed on Friday. India’s Competition Appellate Tribunal (COMPAT) has reserved its order over a batch of appeals filed by cement producers contesting the INR63.07bn (US$1.1bn) penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India for cartel practices. USA January shipments rise 5.2% YoY

Cement shipments in the USA and Puerto Rico for January were up by 5.2 per cent than the same month of last year, the latest preliminary data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) shows. Vietnam Cement Industry Corp (Vicem) has reported a rise in overall cement and clinker sales for the first two months of the year but export volumes declined. The country’s largest cement group sold 2.88Mt of cement and clinker in the first two months of the year, up by 30 per cent from a year earlier. Gansu Qilianshan Cement Group Co Ltd sold 15.25Mt of cement and cement clinker in 2012, representing a YoY  increase of 29.16 per cent, sources reported. The company currently has a cement production capacity of 21.3Mta which it aims to raise to 45Mta by the end of 2015.

Operations resume at Awarpur plant, India

Operations have resumed at UltraTech’s Awarpur cement plant in the state of Maharashtra following a temporary closure due to strike action. The 3.6Mta has been shut since 14 March 2013 due to worker’s unrest but were restarted yesterday morning. Argentine February shipments decline

Argentine cement plants shipped 839,223t, including exports, representing a decline of 7.1 per cent on February last year, according to the latest data published by association AFCP. On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, the February figure was 8.1 per cent less than the amount shipped in January. However, domestic sales, including imports reached 809,280t, an increase of six per cent YoY but a decline of 8.9 per cent MoM.
