Recent press reports have scrutinised the role of the cement industry in reducing global CO2 emissions. ICR speaks with Claude Lorea, cement director, and Dr Andrew Minson, concrete and sustainable construction director, of the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) about the organisation’s role in reducing CO2 emissions and driving the sector’s participation in the circular economy.
ICR: We know that cement is a CO2-intensive process, but there appear to be different views on how much CO2 is actually produced by the industry globally. Can you set the record straight?
Claude Lorea (CL): Different numbers, mostly between 5-8 per cent, are used by independent groups when assessing the share of global CO2 emissions from concrete – primarily through cement manufacture.
