Hello CVN,

You have to be more specific, because 'high' insoluble residue means different things depending on the material you are testing. For example;-

When applied to clinker, IR is useful to determine the amount of unreacted silica present.

When applied to OPC (cement without mineral additives) IR is a measure of both the unreacted silica in the clinker plus any impurities in the gypsum.

When applied to Portland Limestone Cement (PLC), IR is a measure of the unreacted silica in the clinker, plus impurities in the gypsum and limestone filler.

IR becomes less useful as more components are added to cement until with Portland Pozzolan(ic) Cements (PPC)  IR has no real meaning at all, since in most cases the majority of the pozzolanic component is insoluble residue.
