TXI Riverside Cement plant to pay US$221,000 in fines
State and Inland environmental programs will get a financial boost from a recent court judgment against TXI Riverside Cement plant, which authorities said allowed toxic cement dust to escape into residential neighborhoods in two counties.
The Riverside County district attorney and the state attorney general sued the company last year, accusing it of violating state law by failing to notify its neighbours about the health risks of the dust emissions, which contained cancer-causing hexavalent chromium.
Such disclosures are required by Prop. 65, also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, approved by California voters in 1986.
