Holcim’s cement plant in Villaluenga de la Sagra, south of Madrid is to play a major part in providing captured CO2 for a new synthetic aviation fuel plant (e-SAF).  The new 400MW green hydrogen and e-fuels plant in Spain will be capable of producing 100,000tpa of green hydrogen-derived synthetic aviation fuel, using CO2 captured from Holcim’s cement plant.

A trio of companies are behind the project including Ignis P2X (a joint venture between Spanish renewables firm Ionic and US-based KKR), Exolum (a Spanish bulk liquids logistics company) and Holcim. The Eco2Fly green hydrogen and e-kerosene plant will be built at Holcim’s Villaluenga de la Sagra cement plant.

Having signed the strategic partnership for the facility, the new plant is scheduled to be commissioned in 2031, The co-located electrolysers will be powered by 1.5GW of renewables, and will produce over 45,000tpa of renewable H2 exclusively for use in the synthetic fuels plant.
