Lafarge will have to wait 2-4 weeks to learn if the Alpena plant will receive its permit to burn alternate fuels in the facilities kilns.

Both supporters and opponents of the permit were given their turn Tuesday to express their opinions to representatives from the Department of Environment Quality at a public hearing Tuesday.

The final decision will be made by Vinson Hellwig, chief of the DEQ Air and Water Division.

"We are here to have a question and answer session, and then hold a public hearing," Hellwig said. "We will listen to public comment and use the information presented in the permit consideration."
