A rain shower coinciding with an unexpected dust emission created problems for home and car owners in La Salle, Illinois. According to Illinois Cement Co. plant manager Jerry Crittendon, around 12:30 a.m. Monday a dust collector at one end of the kiln stopped working. Internal readings showed nothing wrong, but a visual inspection showed the malfunction. “We shut the system down to try and figure out what happened,” Crittendon said. Dust spewed into La Salle for about 30 minutes, covering homes and cars in a fine layer of cement powder. The dust collector was fixed and the kiln restarted a few hours later.
