Cemex may be negotiating the acquisition of Puerto Rico’s (PR)
second-largest concrete producer Hormigonera Mayagezana, PR press
reported. Other island cement players have voiced their
opposition to the supposed deal. "We have heard that Cemex cold be in
negotiations to buy Hormigonaera Mayagezana. We oppose this, since
Cemex already owns what were the largest cement companies in PR," El
Nuevo Da quoted the president of the general contractors association
(ACG), Roberto Sabater as saying.
"It would be reason for worry if this purchase comes to represent a monopoly," Mr. Sun Ready Mix owner Manuel Ros said.
Cemex entered the PR market several years ago with the purchase of
Puerto Rico Cement. Since then it also has acquired interests in Ready
Mix and Concreto Mixto, making Cemex Puerto Rico the largest cement and
concrete maker on the island. US anti-trust authorities are
reportedly already reviewing the proposed deal.
Established in 1953 and a member of the Empresas Bechara corporate
group, Hormigonera Mayagezana has 20 concrete plants throughout PR, as
well as a fleet of 260 mixer trucks and computerised production and
quality control operations.
