The Lafarge cement works at Dunbar, UK has celebrated a safety milestone after achieving a year without a ‘Lost-Time Incident’, where an accident causes an employee or contractor to take time off work.

The milestone was reached in September after a heightened focus on good leadership, practical workshops, and proactive reporting and remedying of potential hazards.  It was celebrated with a special safety day, attended by Rajeev Ramankutty, industrial director for Lafarge Cement UK.  All employees were treated to breakfast and were given a commemorative polo shirt, then took an extra half-day’s holiday after completing a variety of safety tasks on-site.

Nigel Blair, works manager at Dunbar, said everyone had worked very hard throughout the year to reach the target.

“We’ve been working to introduce a zero-harm working environment where everyone takes extra responsibility to look out for themselves and their fellow workers. This includes reviewing our risk assessments in even greater depth and allocating dedicated days to address any potential hazards that have been raised.  We also all signed a pledge last year committing to put safety at the front of everything we do.

“This approach seems to have really worked. Of course, we can’t take anything for granted and the focus will continue as we head towards our next milestone of two years!” he added.
