The Holcim (US) Portland facility is participating in a year-long community service initiative to mark the centennial anniversary of its parent company, Holcim Ltd. Holcim (US), one of the nation's leading manufacturers and suppliers of cement and mineral components, is celebrating its 100-year anniversary by participating in Together for Communities, an initiative in which employees lead local volunteer projects.
"Our employees at the Portland facility have shown great dedication in their response to Together for Communities," said Sergio Martinez-Hernandez, plant manager of the Holcim (US) Portland plant. "They have planned projects that target education, the environment and the community. I commend the Portland employees and look forward to our continued partnership with the community."
Throughout 2012, employees at the Portland facility participated in numerous community events as part of the Together for Communities initiative. In March, employees gathered at Pathfinder Regional Park on two separate occasions to help install drainage systems, lay sod, and plant ten pine trees, along with 41 other various plants. The landscaping continued at the Florence Pioneer Museum, where employees assisted in the construction of an outdoor storage shed and cleaned up the grounds.
Additional efforts focused on the renovation of the Starpoint "Washington House" and the Rialto Theater, a local historical landmark.
Many of the projects involved working with other members of the Portland community including the local Boys & Girls Club, the Coaldale Fire Department and Canon City High School, where, in May, volunteers teamed up with students to construct and install baskets used in Frisbee Golf.
