Independent Cement and Lime Pty Ltd (ICL) has received permission to build a cement and ground slag facility in a section of the former BHP Steelworks site at Mayfield North, Newcastle, New South Wales.

The plant will receive about 600,000t of dry bulk cement and about 200,000tpa of ground slag, according to the environmental assessment.

The cement and ground slag will be imported to the plant by ship and stored in silos before being distributed by truck. It will operate 24-hours a day, seven days a week with more than 200 truck movements from the site each day.

The key infrastructure needed to be constructed includes wharf unloading facilities, two 35,000t storage silos and piping to convey cement between the wharf and the silos, the assessment says.

ICL said currently about 180 truck loads of cement were delivered to the Hunter from its Port Kembla facility each day.
