An application to demolish parts of the Kandos Cement Works will be considered at Mid-Western Regional Council’s meeting next Wednesday. The demolition would allow for the future use of the site, although some structures are said to have significant historic and cultural importance for the town.
Cement Australia has submitted the application to demolish some structures, gut and fill voids below surface level, remove waste at the cement works site at Jamison Street, which closed in 2011.
The proposal also includes decontamination of a dam and removal of asbestos from the site and could involve the use of explosives. A concrete crushing plant would be temporarily located on the site during the demolition. Meanwhile, a report to council has recommended that the application be approved subject to conditions to alleviate noise, dust and traffic during the demolition.
