Following news of Ghana's difficulties to keep up with cement demand, Tajudeen Sijuede, vice chairman of Dangote Cement Ghana, has acquired the land rights for a new 1.5Mta grinding and bagging plant in Takoradi, western region.
This facility will complement the company's recently-completed grinding unit in Tema, which is ramping up to its 1.5Mta capacity.
Mr Sijuede said: “We are establishing another clinker-grinding plant at Takoradi with capacity of additional 1.5Mta, which will be in operation by second quarter of 2015. The combined capacity of Dangote Cement in Ghana will be 3Mta, the highest capacity being distributed outside Nigeria.
“…we have commenced expansion in Tema which will give us 1.5Mta when we finish because we are adding three belts and two rotors to our packers, making them four and two big silos with 6000t capacity each. By the time we finish this, there will be no shortage of cement in Ghana because we will have more than enough”.
After completion of the Takoradi project and that of Tema in the Greater Accra Region, he said, there would be enough cement on the market and that would also eliminate unnecessary price hikes, caused by scarcity of the commodity.
