Limak Holding has laid the foundation stone for a grinding and packing plant in Maputo, Mozambique, a move that forms part of the Turkish company's vision to become a global cement player. The new facility is scheduled to come into operation in the first quarter of 2016.

The company is also set to lay the foundations for a grinding plant in Cote d'Ivoire next month, according to local press reports.

Speaking to International Cement Review in a recent interview, Gültekin Aksüyek, CEO and Board member of the Limak Cement Group, explained that the company is attracted to the African market for a number of reasons: "We believe that the African cement market provides significant opportunities due to robust economic growth, the need for huge infrastructure investments and lack of sufficient supply in certain markets."

In terms of future expansion in Africa, Mr Aksüyek added: "Based on the market developments and operational aspects, upgrading these plants to integrated units is a further option."
