HeidelbergCement is to start a project capturing CO2 at its Lixhe plant in Belgium. The five-year project is being led by the Low Emissions Intensity Lime and Cement consortium, which includes the Australian technology company Calix, HeidelbergCement, and other lime and cement producers, says Aggregate Research.

The project, which has been granted US$13m in EU funds, calls for the construction of a cutting-edge testing facility to study a new technology for the capture of CO2.

In the first three years, the project will focus on deciding the design of the demonstration plant. The pilot unit will go through two years of extensive testing afterwards.
