Despite growth in export to neighbouring countries, the export revenue of Pakistan's cement industry did not increase, due to overall weak demand from overseas markets.

Pakistan cement manufacturers earned export revenues of US$24.52m on the export of 476,170t of cement during the month of September 2016 compared to US$30.04m on 573,395t in previous month. This translates to exports falling by 18.35 per cent and 16.96 per cent in terms of quantity and value in dollar, respectively on MoM basis.

According to Federal Bureau of Statistics, if compared with September 2015 (US$28.09m on 497,672t) the contraction stands at 12.6 per cent and 4.32 per cent in terms of quantity and value in dollar, respectively on YoY basis.

On cumulative basis, the negative trend was also observed in 1QFY16-17. Pakistan through July-September 2016 exported 1.48Mt at US$77.29m compared to 1.53Mt at US$87.70m in July-Sep 2015. This translates to a decline of 2.8 per cent and 11.8 per cent in terms of quantity and value in dollar, respectively on YoY basis.

A spokesman for All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) said that during September 2016, exports to Afghanistan increased nominally from 0.223Mt in September 2015 to 0.228Mt in September 2016, showing an expansion of two per cent.

However, exports to India registered healthy increase from 0.055Mt in September last year to 0.112Mt during the same month this year, showing growth of 101 per cent. Exports to India are mainly through the Wahga border and southern coast of India.
